ACT therapy aims to help people to gain a greater degree of psychological flexibility over the familiar thoughts and feelings that often limit our actions
For example fears about work or socialising often cause us to become overwhlemed. The feeling of being overwhelmed then leads to further distress and is accompanied by uncomfortable physical symptoms that then impact on how we behave. This form of therapy aims to help people have more control over how the physical and psychological symotoms impact on them allowing them, reducing their strength and allowing people to do more of what is important to them
An ACT based treatment would involve looking at a person's goals and how they want to live their life, then work with the barriers to achieving these goals.
